Luchenko is a Soviet former World Chess Champion and still a formidable opponent in his 60s. He is Beth's penultimate opponent in the Moscow Invitational. After she defeats him, he graciously congratulates her and tells her she is the strongest player he has ever faced.
Luchenko is played by the German film producer and occasional actor Marcus Loges.

- Marcus Loges only styled his mustache when playing Luchenko! His hair is naturally wild.
- Marcus is actually a producer of the Queens Gambit, he was chosen to play Luchenko because he naturally "looked like a Chess Master"
